CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL
ANNUAL CONCERT A varied and interesting programme was presented by pupils of the Christchurch Boys’ High School when they held their annual concert last night in the Radiant Theatre., The concert was good entertainment throughout, and often real musical and dramatic talent was revealed. The gymnastic display, usually an important feature of a school concert, was outstanding, and reflected great credit on the instructor (Mr J. G. Mullins). The ease with which difficult gymnastic feats were performed was sufficient evidence of the high degree of training and agility which had been achieved.
Music plays no small part in the educational scheme to-day, and ample proof of the careful training received by the boys in both vocal and instrumental music was given in many items. A good deal of the success of this important work is du6 to the efforts of the conductor of the school band (Captain C. H. Hoskin) and to the conductor of the school choir (Mr I. Cilfton Cook), who seems to be able to inspire his pupils with a real feeling for, and understanding of, music. The everpopular “Widdecombe Fair” by the Sixth Form Singers was especially well received.
Pleasing solo performances were given by I. A. Boyd (piano accordion), N. G. Hattaway (songs), F. E. Dennis (piano and songs), and D. T. Nunn (tap dance).
An amusing one-act play, “The Invisible Duke, was successfully produced by Mr C. L. Ridgen. The part of Lady Emilia was most convincingly played by D. S. Young. Others in the cast who gave good performances were R. E. Brassington, J. A. Johnston, J. S. Pollard, P. F. Morrow, and D. R. Wederell. A sketch, “The Rising Generation,” was produced by Form V.G.R., and included in the cast J. S. Mackenzie. A. A. Leopold, K. R. Blick, and H. L. Neison. Probably the most popular item, at least with the pupils, was the one-act play. “Love and Cousin Albert,” in which the parts were played by the following members of the staff: Messrs H. W. Gourlay, P. B. Vincent, T. E. M. Harper, S. R. Cuming, and V. F. Wilkinson. The play was produced by Mr S. R. Cuming.
