Anniversary of Cook’s Landing.—Today is the anniversary of Captain Cook’s first landing at Poverty Bay in 1769, 178 years ago. A public function to commemorate the occasion will take glace at Cook Memorial, Kaiti Beach, risbome, and the Gisborne Borough Council has invited all local organisations to take part. The gathering will be addressed by the Mayor of Gisborne (Mr N. H. Bull) and other speakers, and will be the first for some years.
