MARGIN OF 11 POINTS

CANTERBURY WINS AT TIMARU SOUTH CANTERBURY BEATEN IN FAST GAME South Canterbury lost for the second time this season, at Fraser Park, Timaru, on Saturday, when Canterbury ran up ascore of 29 to South Canterbury's 18 in a bright game. Play in the second half reached a very exciting pitch, backs and / forwards of both teams joining in, the numerous scoring movements. Good handling characterised the play. There was only a fair number of spectators, because of the inter-island fixture at Invercargill. Both teams kept the ball loose, and there was little tight play. Throughout the game the Canterbury backs were w.ell fed with snappy dive passes from Savage, who received the ball from the majority of the scrums, and they showed more combination and penetration. At one stage in the second spell it appeared as if the visiting forwards might dominate play with their passing rushes, one of whiciT resulted in a try. Sure tackling by the home team helped .to break up these movements. Very fast in the loose*, the-South Canterbury forwards kept well up on the ball, but were slow in backing up on defence The line-outs were about even. The South Canterbury full-back, Prattley, impressed by taking the ball cleanly, and his long kicking, particularly in the first half, was useful. Of the visiting forwards, Duff, Couling, Gordon, and Clarke made the best showing, while for South Canterbury, Hanson, Fitzgerald, Paterson, and Patrick were the most prominent. O’Hara was the only forward in the home pack who worked hard in the tight. The teams were:— Canterbury.—Backs: T. Jackson, R. r Clarke, D. Jones, P. T. McGuire, P | Kearney, J. Roach (captain), L. Canterbury was quick to retaliate, and Duff crossed South Canterbury’s line about three minutes later to touch down after picking up a stray pass by Kearney just short of the line. After obtaining possession, Edgeler sprinted almos.t to Canterbury’s goal-line, but his kick over the head gave Canterbury pos-*-session. Edgeler was later penalised for being off-side while trying to carry out a similar movement. When he crossed South Canterbury’s line. Clarke was well and truly tackled and lost possession, but, following up fast. Gordon forced down. At half-time the score remained: Canterbury 11, South Canterbury 6.
