MR CHURCHILL’S SPEECH
RETURNED SERVICEMEN’S
PROTEST (P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 3. “Mr Randolph Churchill has said that fifth columnists are our worst enemies. I say that any man who attempts to engender war is the biggest fifth columnist there ever was,” said Mr R. Gilbert at the annual meeting of the Dunedin branch of the' 2nd N.Z.E.F. Association last night. “It would be a wiser plan for him to return to his own country, and convince his own people because he will not sway the opinion of the ‘Kiwis’,” Mr Gilbert said. Mr J. P. Mathieson said that the “Kiwis” would help their fellow soldiers, the “Tommies,” as much as they coula in Britain’s crisis because they had fought side by side in the war. “We do not want a warmonger here.” he said, and asked about the attitude of the association to Mr Churchill The Dominion president (Mr K Melvin) said the association was not particularly interested in the visit o f Mr Churchill, and he did not think any impression would be made on public opinion by Mr Churchill’s views. “I begrudge the time given to this discussion,” said Mr Melvin, who added that he wondered if Mr Churchill was worth “this powder and shot.” After several members had spoken on the subject, it was decided to take any further discussion in committee.
JUGOSLAVS’ CRITICISM
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 3. Jugoslavs in New Zealand protested against “irresponsible statements” by Mr Randolph Churchill at the Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday said the secretary of the Jugoslav Association (Mr M. Icevich). In particular, they objected to Mr Churchill’? “attempt to whitewash the proven traitor Draja Mikhailovic.”
