CHELSEA CHINA WORK

NEW EXHIBIT AT MUSEUM An example of the china work produced by the Chelsea factories during their best period about 1770 has been received for display by the Canterbury Museum. It is a 12-inch figure in delicate colours of William Shakespeare. The exhibit, which is a family heirloom, has been lent to the museum by Mr F. H. Jellett, of Miller’s Flat, Otago. The Chelsea factories were noted for their skilful and delicate

modelling in china, and the particular grade'which the exhibit represents is considered to be equal to that attained by the Dresden manufacturers. The figure carries a scroll which bears an inscription from “The Tempest”: “The cloud cap’t towers and gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea. all which it inherit, shall dissolve And like the baseless fabric of a vision, Leave not a wrack behind.” *
