MAN DISAPPEARS
STEAMER TICKET NOT USED
NO NEWS FOR THREE MONTHS From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, October 2.
On June 28 last Mr William lan Macann, aged 34, a clerk in the accounts branch of the Post and Telegraph Department in Wellington, said good-bye to his wife and two children in Seatoun and left to catch the steamer express to Lyttelton. He has not been heard of since.
Mr Macann had been promoted to a position in the accounts branch of the Christchurch Post Office, but he has not reported, to the Christchurch Post Office.
The Wellington police say that although Mr McCann did buy a ticket for the steamer express his ticket was never presented to the Union Steam Ship Company. They regard it as most unlikely that he ever went to the South Island.
On August 18 a claim by Mr Macann for possession of a house in Fairfield avenue, Christchurch, was heard before Mr Justice Fleming in the Supreme Court. Mr B. A. Barrer, counsel for Mr Macann, then told the Court that the plaintiff had left his home in Wellington with the intention of corn-, ing to Christchurch to see his solicitor about the case, but had disappeared. Evidence on those lines was given by Mrs Macann.
His Honour, in a reserved decision on August 25, granted an order for possession of the house, the writ not to Issue until the expiry of six weeks from the date of the judgment. Mr Macann lived in Wellington at 67 Marine parade, Seatoun. He is officially stated not to have been in good health when he left Wellington. He is of slight build, five feet nine inches in height, with brown hair. When he left home he was wearing a three-piece, single-breasted suit and an overcoat, an Air Force blue shirt, and black shoes. He carried with him a full suitcase of clothes.
