SUM® ADJUSTMENT EXPECTED
BUTTER UNCHANGED Some change in town mffk prices ip expected to follow the announcement of the new season’s guaranteed prices for butter and cheese. Town milk’ prices are based on the guaranteed prices, although certain extra allowances are made to producers.
No change is expected in tffe retail price of butter because of the ipcrease in the guaranteed prices. The* difference between the guaranteed price and the local price has recently been borne by the Government, and it is expected that this arrangement will continue. Also the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) announced recently that ’ the subsidy on butter would not he withdrawn. The subsidy wjll now be more than 7d a pound. . The price of cheese is expected to increase, however, and grocers in Christchurch have been advised air ready that the increase is likely to be by.4d to Is 6d. Cheese is pot rationed, bqt retailers receive only a proportion qf their pre-war sales. The price of matured cheese is not restricted, but the price of fresh cheese has been subsidised for sorpe time.
