INCREASED PAY ON TRAMWAYS

EXTRA 5/’ A WEEK AWARDED

FINAL DECISION OF TRIBUNAL

(PA,) WELLINGTON, October 1. Another increase of 5s a week from October 1 to bring them into line with the Arbitration Court’s standard wage pronouncement has been granted to tramwaymen ip the final decision in the national tramways ’dispute given by Mr A. B. Rigg, Conciliation Commissioner. Mr Rigg was chairman of the tribunal under 'the Strikes and Lockouts Regulations which dealt with' the claims °f the New Zealand Tramway Employees’ Union for uniform conditions on tramway services throughout New Zealand. Mr Rigg’s decision has been supplied to the parties. It embodies the terms of the- interim decision published on July 31 and provides for the incorporation of special local provisions for various centres, together with the additional pay increases of 5s a week. Under the interiip decision wages were placed on a. uniform basis for all centres at a figure of lid an hour or as a week greater than the highest rate ruling at that time for various classes of work. The shift allowance for traffic staffs was increased from Is 6d a shift -to 2s, Provision was made for time and a hajf rates for Saturday work and double time for Sundays within the 40-hour week. As agreed between the parties meal reliefs of half an fiaqr are to be provided, 1$ minutes of which is to be paid for by the employers.
