THE DUNEDIN GUINEAS

RACING

FILLIES’ RECORD

Should Excellency win the Dunedin Guineas on Saturday she will be following in the footsteps of some high-class fillies. Since the initial race for the Dunedin Guineas in 1913, fillies have been successful on only nine occasions. First of their sex to win was Kilrea in 1917. Although she did nothing to distinguish herself afterwards, she later bred Money Order, a gelding which won in 1925. The next successful filly was Wild Hind in 1923. As a two-year-old she had beaten Razzle Dazzle in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. At the stud she produced a high-class performer in Wild Chase and a good mare in Wild Fox. Three years later Countersign gained. the • honours. She won five races in all, including the Hazlett Memorial Plate, and at the stud produced Indian Sign, which ’won the Wellesley Stakes as a two-year-old, and but for unsouudness might have distinguished himself as a steeplechaser. In 1932 Silver Scorn was successful and she ranks as the' best filly ever to have won the lace. She was easily the best of her year and won the New Zealand Derby, Oaks, and St. Leger, Great' Northern Derby, Oaks, and St. Leger, the Dunedin Cup, Hazlett Gold Cup and the CXC. Middle Park Plate that season. She failed to strike form in Australia, and at the stud has produced the A.J.C. St. Leger winner Accession.

Winning Rival won in 1939. She had won the McLean Stakes and the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, but was not up to the class of Salutation, which won in-,1941. Salutation also won the Wellington Guineas, N.Z. Oaks, and W.R.C. Thompson and Anniversary Handicaps that season, and was retired to the stud at the end of that season when at the height of her powers. Royal Flight, another top class mare, especially under winter conditions, won in 1943. As a two-year-old Royal Flight won the C.J.C. Welcome* Stakes and later won the Winter Cup. She was the first of the stock of Salmagundi, the sire of Excellency, to be successful. Salmagundi was represented by another winner in 1945, when Psalm was successful. Psalm had started .her career with a win in the McLean Stakes and completed a double that had been accomplished by four horses. Royal Stag, Winter Wind, Count Cavour, and Winning Rival. Unsoundness unfortunately restricted Psalm’s career. Last year’s Winner, Lovemorn, beat a weak field after having left the maiden ranks the previous Saturday. She has not won since but the best may yet be seen of her. None of the successful fillies had a two-year-old record to match that of Excellency, which wgs undefeated in her five starts. She was a class above those she met and it is her Class that should see her through on Saturday. Typhoon Drops Dead » Typhoon dropped dead during a gallop at Awapuni on Tuesday. Ridden by V. J. Sellars, he was paired with Afcco over half a mile-, but after running a furldng he faltered and fell. He died instantly. Sellars escaped injury. Typhoon was raced by his breeder, Mr A. E. Preston, Wellington, atld was a seven-year-old gelding by Defoe from Doe. He was one of the biggest horses in training in New Zealand. His most important successes were in the North Island Challenge Stakes and the Patriotic Handicap at Trentham. the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap . (dead-heat with First In), and the Levin Handicap. He was joint holder with Foxhaven of the New Zealand mile and a half record of 2min 294 sec, established when he Won the Patriotic Handicap at Trentham in January, 1945. Likely Favourites Trident, the runner-up to Magical in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui laft Saturday, has drawn No. 3 at the barrier in the Juvenile Handicap next Saturday. Her stable-mate. Robin Redbreast, with which she -will be bracketed, has drawn the rails, and the bracket is likely to be in strong demand. Finished On Aganev was finishing on in fourth place in the Kaikorai Hack Handicap at Wjngatui lafet Saturday after being slow away. Aganev is slow to find her feet, blit she finishes on well, and o-n Saturday will tackle the Salisbury Hack Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs. The hack stayers in the Clarendon Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday were a Very or dih - ary lot, and the only improvers in the field looked to be Fine Night and Sword Dancer. However, both of these Would need to show considerable improvement, and Aganev. should have their measure. Last season as a three-year-old filly Aganev had a success over Salmon Spear to ,her credit. Preparation interrupted Great Trek’s engagement in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas on Saturday was not continued. At Hastings last Saturday his traiher, B. H. Morris, was unable to say Whether his charge would be fit enough to take his place in the Guineas field. Great Trek was treated last week fot a slight attack of kidney trouble. His trainer sajd that attacks was not bad. but in tSfe later. a -dSlneas candidate's ’preparation* Wafe 'ndt helpful to his chance. Great Trek is engaged in the Wellington Guineas, and has been nominated for the Shorts Hahdicap oil the first day. Brilliant Beginner

Strathconan, the winner of the second division of the Junction Novice Stakes at Reefton last Saturday, carries a 101 b penalty m the Black Point Novice Stakes on Saturday. She has ndt much size, but is such a brilliant beginner that the increase in weight may not stop her from repeating her fifrst day’s Success. Strathconan, which has not done much racing, is a three-year-old bay filly by Nightmarch from SirathaWyn, by Balboa tfom the imported mare Bpean Bridge, the dam also of Auctot arid Salmi. She was bred at Mr A Louisson’s Ladbrooks Stud, and sold as a yearling for 530 guineas to Mr D. Grant; -of Timaru, ior whom she is traihed by R. P. Register and F. Hanrahan. ■ Not Starting at Reefton H Nurse accepted with both St. Nattar and, Tranby croft for the Reef ton meeting on Saturday, but the latter will not make the trip. St. Nattar did not handle the turns well in the Maruia Handicap last -Week, but may do better on Saturday, when he will meet the winner, John o’ London, on 51b better terms. Nominated for Trentham Riccarton horses nominated for the minor events only at the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting next month are: Wane, Broie, Tranbycroft, Beechwood, Altruist, Invest, Leadership, Coral Are, Sedgemere, Confidence Trick, Primitive, Shere Khan, Wide Rdnge, and Dark Arrow. Fresh Horses Gay Quest and Scene, both members of A. B. Stove’s team, will be the only fresh horses from Riccarton engaged at the Reefton meeting on Saturday. Gay Quest, a four-year-old gelding by Gay Circle from Skyquest, the granddam of Don’t Forget and Hansel, had his only start to date this seasori in the Novice Stakes at Ashburton last month. Scene, which has a knee that gives trouble, is a five-year-old mare by Nightly from Play-:, away, and her only appearance this season was in the Raukapuka Hack Handicap at Gefraldine last month. Scene won the maiden race each day at the Westport Jockey Club’s autumn meeting last March, winning very easily on both oGeraldine R.C.
