AMERICAN GRAIN PRICES
INCREASE ON CHICAGO MARKET CHICAGO, September 29. Grains surged upward in a broad buying movement on the Board of Trade to-day. Wheat futures rose 10 cents a bushel, which is the maximum permitted in a single session. Maize and oats were up about six cents. The chief reason for the buying movement was the report of Mr Truman’s advisers recommending the export of 570,000,000 bushels of all grains to Europe, including 500,000,000 bushels of wheat and flour. > Grain merchants said that the new recommendation would leave a very small carryover into the new crop year beginning on July 1. Cattle prices also climbed to record levels. Choice heavy steers brought 85 dollars 90 cents per 1001 b, representing a 15 pgr cent, advance on the previous high price this year. , , Prices also rose in other wholesale and retail markets.
Prayers for Russians’ Conversion. — Members of the Mt. Vernon Congregational Church, Boston, prayed last night for the “conversion” of Mr Stalin, Mr Molotov, and Mr Vyshinsky Dr. Frank Lauback, missionary at large, led the prayers after telling the congregation that “Mr Stalin might be converted. It is not ridiculous to think so.”—New York, September 29.
