GIFT FOR RONGOTAI WITHDRAWN

time Limit expires

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 30. An offer of £lOOO towards the development of Rongotai aerodrome made through the Junior Chamber of Commerce last May has lapsed as the conditions were first that a decision be made by September 30, second, that work be started on the first stage of the extension of Rongotai within a year, and third, that the £lOOO be free of gift duty. The City Council was reminded of the date of expiry and it suggested that the donor be asked for an extension of time, but this he was unwilling to give, as it would weaken the purpose of the gift. The council had made plans and submitted them to the Government, the Mayor (Mr Will Appleton) said to-day. but it could do no more. A scale model was being prepared by the City Engineer’s department at the Government’s request, but the council was powerless until the Government’s decision was made.
