PARIS REPORT ATTACKED

“INADEQUATE AND HARMFUL” POLISH CRITICISM IN UNITED NATIONS NEW YORK, September 28. Dr. Oscar Lange (Poland) yesterday criticised the 16-nation report from Paris on the European economic situation as inadequate and harmful to the United Nations’ prestige and effectiveness. Dr. Lange, who was addressing the General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee, said that the 16 nations did not constitute an economic entity, and the whole plan was an unstable arrangement. Europe could not be reconstructed and developed if

divided into two parts. Western Europe needed eastern Europe, and vice versa. Dr. Lange, condemning the “bypassing” of the United Nations by the Marshall plan, introduced a resolution which would advise United Nations members not to establish economic rehabilitation machinery outside the United Nations.

The committee postponed the debate until Monday. In a statement approving the 16 nations’ report on the Marshall plan, Mr Churchill’s United Europe Movement said that the economic action proposed should be regarded as the first step in a much bolder plan for the progressive integration of Europe’s life and resources.
