PACIFIC SINGLES WON BY KRAMER

DOUBLES FINAL TAKES FOUR HOURS

It was a brilliant match, with Schroeder threatening throughout. He tenaciously fought the first set, but Kramer’s strong service was decisive

Kramer and Schroeder won the men’s doubles final against Frank Parker and Francisco Segura, 9-11, 7-5, 6-2, 9-11, 12-10. This match of 82 games, lasting four hours, is considered the longest and hardest-fought in the 21 years of the tournament’s history. The women’s singles title went to Miss Beverley Baker, who beat Mrs Patricia Canning Todd, 6-3, 6-2.

STANDARD OF PLAY DISCUSSED

"The Canterbury team at present has no chance of winning the Wilding Shield.” said Mr E. A. Lee. vice-presi-dent of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, at the annual meeting of the association last evening. Mr Lee said hm remarks were not made in disrespect to the present players, but many of them would agree with him that they were past their best playing days. Something had to be done about the matter said Mr Lee, and the only way was the development of junior players Efforts had been made to secure a coach outside Christchurch, but without result If a coach was appointed the association could receive a subsidy from the NewZealand Association towards the cost oi his expenses. The services of Mr A. D. Brown would be available for coaching for a limited number. It was decided to. appoint a sub-committee to go into the question of junior coaching.

The St. Martins Valley Tennis Club was admitted to membership of the association.

Mr Lee reported that the New Zealand junior championships would be held at Wilding Park, commencing on January 19. Numbers for championships had been restricted to'64 for the boys’ and girls' singles and 48 in the doubles. On the motion of the delegates of the Elmwood Club it was decided to recommend to the competitions committee that it consider the possibility of the formation of a men’s senior reserve grade. The motion was carried by a small majority. The Wilding Park levy was fixed at 5s a member.
