Viscount Addison Secretary of State for Cpmiponwealth Relations, and Lady Addison will visit Rotorua before they return to Auckland, from where they will leave for Brisbane by flying-boat on October 6. After a short stay in Brisbane they will fly to India. —(F.0.0.R.)

The appointment of Professor R. M. Gabriel, M.A., ps Professor pf Mathematics at the University of Otago in succession to Dr. R. J. T. Bell, has been announced. Professor Gabriel is a reader in mathematics at the University of Leeds, and is well known ip England for his research in mathematical analysis.—(P.A.) Mr S. E. Shaw has relinquished the position of secretary of tne firm of Newton King, Ltd., New Plympqth. Mr R. C. M. Sunley succeeds Mr Shpw, who was secretary for 26 years. M r Shaws retains the position of general manager of the company and also remains a member of the directorate. Mr Alex. Anderson, manager pf the Timaru branch of the National MortSage and Agency Company of New ealand, Ltd., will retire next week after more than 50 years in mercantile work. Mr Anderson began work in 189? with a mercantile company m Ashburton, which was absorbed by the National Mortgage and Agency Company within 10 years, and he has been with the firm ever since. He was appointed manager at Gore in 1921, and was transferred to Ashburton in a similar capacity in 1925. The following year he accepted his present position in Timaru. Mr Anderson was met by members of the staff of the branch last week and presented with a wallet of notes by the sub-manager, Mr H. R. Williams, who paid tribute io Mr Anderson’s work with the firm, He will be succeeded by Mr W. E. Baird. Mr H. Scott, superintendent of police in Christchurch, will leave by the steamer express this evening for Wellington on departmental business. He will be in Wellington for three weeks.

In appreciation of his long service to motoring, Mr W. R. Carey was elected an honorary life member of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), oh Saturday evening. Mr Carey has been president of the association for several years, was treasurer for 25 years, and has been president of the South island Motor Union for a long time, The Automobile Association (Canter-? bury) decided at its annual meeting to send greetings to its immediate past president (Mr J. L. Danks). who was not well enough to attend.
