“MISS NEW ZEALAND” CONTEST
REPLY TO CRITICISM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 26. Strong exception was taken by Mr K. W. Kilpatrick, executive director of the “Miss New Zealand” contest, to a statement reported from Dunedin that the contest was “low." So far from being at that level, the contest had won the commendation and support of a formidable list of individuals and organisations, including the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holl”nd), the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and various trade unions, he said. The remarks were a reflectio; upon Dunedin girls in the contest, and others in that city who were giving active support to the St. George Society in its food for Britain drive.
