ACCIDENTS
RAILWAY PORTER KILLED RUN OVER BY ENGINE (P.A.) DUNEDIN. September 26. Run over by a railway engine at the Dunedin yards this evening, Arthur John Bell, a widower, aged 64, employed by the Railways Department as a porter, was killed instantly. Both his legs were severed, and his body was mutilated. Bell was crossing the yards when he was overtaken by an engi’.e which could not be stopped in time to avoid the accident.
MAN’S DEATH FROM INJURIES
James Milliken, aged 68 years, a station-holder, of Cass, died at the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday from injuries which he suffered at Cass on September 15, when he fell from a railway truck. Mr Milliken was helping his men to load hay. He was admitted to the hospital suffering from spinal injuries. An inquest into Mr Milliken’s death, which was opened before the Coroner (Mr H. P. Lawry) last evening, was adjourned sine die.
CHILD DROWNED IN HEATHCOTE RIVER
Sandra Joyce Payne, aged 18 months, the daughter of Mr and Mrs E. R. Payne, of 59 Hoon Hay road, was drowned in the Heathcote river yesterday morning.
The child had been playing about the house just before 10 a.m., when she was missed. A search was started at once and 10 minutes later she was found in the river, which runs along the back of the property. Artificial respiration was tried without result and the child was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but she was found to be dead.
An inquest was opened last evening before the Coroner (Mr H. P. Lawry), who adjourned the hearing sine die.
THREE MEN INJURED IN COLLISION
When the car in which they were travelling along Ferry road collided with a tram near the Heathcote bridge last evening, three men, Charles Newton. of 15 Chapel street. Papanui. Ivan Ashley Smith, of 23 Richmond Hill, Sumner, and W. Ray, of 773 Gloucester street, Christchurch, were injured. Two of them were admitted to hospital. Mr Newton suffered a fractured arm, and Mr Smith head injuries. Mr Ray was treated in the out-patients department of the hospital and was later discharged. The condition of the other two men late last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
WOMAN FALLS FROM BICYCLE
Mrs Carol Harper, of 1043 Colombo street. Christchurch, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday morning after falling from her bicycle in Cashel street, near Manchester street. Her condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
