SETTLEMENT OF REFUGEES
WELLINGTON, September 26. The settlement of refugees was a big problem, and at present it was inopportune to bring refugees to New Zealand said the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) in the House of Representatives to-day when the External Affairs Department estimates were discussed. Mr Nash added in reply to questions raised by Mr S. W. Smith (Opposition, Robson) and Mr E. D. Aderman (Opposition, New Plymouth), that negotiations would have to be held later in an attempt to solve the refugee problem.
New Zealand could not see 1,000,000 persons stateless when she could expand her population.
