Daffodil Day
Permission for the Canterbury Horticultural Society to make a collection in the Botanic Gardens on the Sunday known as Daffodil Day was given by the City Council last, evening. The director of reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) reported that September 28 had been tentatively fixed for Daffodil Day, but the exact date would depend on the time the daffodils flowered.
Notifiable Diseases.—Five cases of tuberculosis, four of scarlet fever, and three of puerperal septicaemia were reported in Canterbury to the Department of Health last week. From the West Coast two cases of tuberculosis and two of scarlet fever were reported, and there was one death from tuberculosis. No deaths were reported in Canterbury. Fire Board Levy Increased.— An additional amount of £4750 is now payable by the Christchurch City Council to the Christchurch Fire Board as a result of the adoption of a new industrial agreement for permanent firemen, which has substantially increased the board’s expenditure for the current year. In a letter received by the council last evening the secretary of the Fire Board (Mr S. F. Marshall) said that the increased expenditure, which amounted to £9500 had now been approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry).
