THE LEATHER TRADE
HIDE POSITION RATHER z BETTER LONDON, August 16. There has been a number of factors tending to limit business in leather during the last week. In the first place holidays are an influence and business in many cases is being confined to immediate needs while there is still a hope that the Control will after all be. able to make some concessior s as regards purchasing in the next period ?n official decision may be delayed through those highlyplaced being on holiday, a matter occasioning considerable comment in Parliament, but an official announcement is awaited anxiously by those in the boot and shoe trade. The question ife whether Britain’s economical crisis will prevent partial relaxation of sole leather buying restrictions. The position in the upper leather section continues very difficult. Supplies of the desired qualities continue small, and the shortage of skins indicates a continuance of the restricted range of qualities. As regards hide supplies, there appears to be some relaxation in the long-stand-ing tension respecting Argentine hides which has prevented business with the United Kingdom Buenos Aires reports now claim that the United Kingdom pool has bought 120.000 Liebig and Bovril light ox hides at 17gd per lb and 10,000 Liebig and Bovril cows at 16 9-16 d.
