“ATOM WAR WILL NEVER OCCUR”
FRENCH MINISTER’S OPINION
(Rec. 9 p.m.) PARIS, August 29. “Atomic war will never occur because the defence keeps pace with the attack,” said the French Minister of War (Mr Paul Floret) at a dinner in Paris in honour of Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery. He cited the case of poison gas, which was not used in the last war. He added that France’s future safety would depend on a strong army based on the annual conscription of classes. “The next war will be a battle of pilot(les& projectiles, but in the *wake of them it will be necessary to Occupy territory,” he said. Sale of Ships Opposed.—The National Federation of American Shipping has issued a statement opposing the sale of any more war-built cargo ships to foreign operators. The federation contended that primarily because of purchases of American war-built vessels and large construction programmes, foreign merchant fleets were expanding beyond earlier estimates, while the tonnage of the active United States fleet was decreasing.—New York, August 28.
