GOVERNMENT OF GREECE
Coalition To Be Formed
STATEMENT BY MR TSALDARIS
(Rec. 11.15 p.m.) ATHENS, August 28. The Populist Party leader (Mr Tsaldaris) announces that the Greek political crisis is over and that a coalition Government will be formed this morning under a neutral Prime Minister. It is believed that the Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Arms (General
Alexander Papagos) will be asked to preside over the new Cabinet. Earlier, the United States Ambassador to Greece (Mr Lincoln MacVeagh) had sent a letter to Mr Tsaldaris saying that while tne State Department was unwilling to interfere in the internal affairs of Greece, it would welcome a broader Government. (Mr Tsaldaris said on Tuesday that he would form a cabinet with his Populist Party, and leave the door open to any other party willing to fight the Communists.) Yesterday, the leaders of the Centre parties asked King Paul to convene the Council of the Crown (a council of Parliamentary leaders) to form a coalition Government. Other Greek party leaders told the King that “any unilateral solution of the Government crisis would be harmful to Greek in-* terests.”
