LONDON, August 27. On September 7 the British meat ration is to be cut from Is 2d to Is a week in drastic new economies which include food, foreign travel, and petrol, enabling Britain to save £228,000,000 a year in imports. This was announced by No. 10 Downing Street, to-night. The basic petrol ration is to be abolished, so that motoring may only be possible, as it was during the war, for essential purposes. The tea ration will not be raised above the present reduced level (two ounces a week). Ration books must be surrendered after two nights in a hotel instead of four nights as at present. Supplies of foodstuffs to commercial catering establishments will be cut by 15 to 18 per cent, from September 14. These cuts will not apply to canteens or to commercial restaurants not charging more than 2s 3d for any meal. Attendances at public luncheons and dinners will be limited and the import of certain luxury foods will be prohibited. Other adjustments in food consumption will be announced" later.
