PRICE INCREASES ESTIMATED
——« EFFECT OF REDUCED SUBSIDIES FIGURES QUOTED BY MR CLYDE CARR. M.P. (From Qui Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, August 28. Estimates of the effect of the withdrawal of subsidies on retail prices, of a number of commodities arid services in common use were given by Mr Clyde Carr (Government, Tlmaru) in his Budget debate speech in tne House of Representatives this evening, • He referred to Subsidies as a successful part of the Government’s stabilisation policy. There would have to be an approximate retail price increase of 4d a dogen jn the case of eggs to cancel out the floor subsidy and a further 3d a dozen to make up for the removal of the wheat and flour subsidy, said Mr Carr. Other price increases whi?h it wag estimated would be necessary to cover the removal of subsidies were given by Mr Cgrr as follows; Apples and pears, Jd a pound. ' and ham, 2|d to 3d a pound. Milk (bottled and pasteurised), Ijd a quart. Prunes, 3|d a pound. Meat, Id tp lid a pound, Sugar. 2id a pound, Tea. 2s to 2s 2d a pound. Butter, s£d a pound. Cheese. 3d a pound. Coal, 6d a cwt bag. Bread, Id a two-pound loaf. Flour (wholesale), £7 5s a ton. Footwear, 4 per cent. Tobacco, 2|d a two-ounce packet. Cigarettes, id a packet of 10. Domestic gas, Is to 3s a month. Railway passenger fares, 15 per cent.
