LAND ALLEGED TO BE UNUSED
LARGE AREA ROUND CHRISTCHURCH OBSERVATIONS MADE BY LABOUR M.P. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, August 28, An allegation that there were hundreds of acres on the outskirts of Christchurch which were not being used was made by Mr H. E. Combs (Government, Onslow) in a Budget debate speech in the House of Representatives this evening. Mr Combs said he was recently in Christchurch on Milk Council business. In a total of 10 hours of crisscross driving in and around Christchurch, he had . seen hundreds and hundreds of acres put to no use. Mr J. T. Watts (Opposition, St. Albans): That’s not correct. Another member; He must be thinking of Hagley Park. Mr Combs reiterated that there were hundreds of paddocks which did not have an animal on them and which had not seen a plough for years. Apparently they were*being held for speculation.
