Recruiting in Australia
, T^ e Australian Army had just started this month recruiting for permanent forces and the campaign did not go off to a spectacular start, said the Chief of the Australian General Staff (Lieutenant-General V. A. H. Sturdee) in an interview at Auckland. It was hoped that greater progress would be made as the campaign developed, although when every industry was crying out for labour it was difficult to expect a rush of men to the army. Present conditions made for a hard labour market, but some former soldiers were returning to the Army, possibly because, with endless strikes in industry, they found that civilian life was not quite as good as life in the Army.—(PJL)
