SECRET STRIKE BALLOT

Sir, —Many a unionist has experienced the humiliation that can be inflicted on a voter at a trade union meeting, who votes against the rabid section and its agitator executive. The only safe method for ascertaining the will of the rank and file of a union as to a proposed strike is by postal ballot. The counting should be outside the influence of any trade union, although scrutineers from the union concerned should be provided for. Ballot papers should be numbered and unsigned, as in electoral voting. This method will be anathema to the agitator —hence the most advisable. The “packed” meeting will not represent the rank and file in most secret ballots at meetings.—Yours, etc., ALL THE DIFFERENCE. August 27, 1947.
