MANNEQUIN PARADE

FASHIONS AT WOMEN’S CLUB Smart suits of silk and boucle, crisp summer frocks, and evening gowns of heavy satin, rich velvet, and floral silk in modern designs were displayed at the Canterbury Women’s Club last night, when an up-to-the-minute parade was held with members of the club as mannequins. The reception room was crowded and the audience was most appreciative of the skill with which Mrs Ina Allan compered the parade. The short frocks, in lovely colours or in effective combinations of colours, featured the new wide shoulder line and flared peplums, and for evening wear gowns were often embroidered with beads and sequins. Pleasing variety in the shape, trimming, and colouring of hats ensured satisfaction for women of any age and almost any laste. The mannequins, who displayed the frocks with grace and dignity, were Mesdames H. B. Whitta, J. I. Smail, N. Barlow, T. Kennedy. W. G. Witte, H. G. Norris, G. Maginness, T. King, Misses R. Stewart, A. Caygill, M. Zouch, A. Freeman. At an interval in the parade, songs were sung by Mrs C. Cogswell and Miss Kilkelly was pianist. The president of the club (Mrs J. P. Rickard) presided and Mrs R. J. McLaren thanked all who had helped to .stage the exhibition, and presented flowers to Mrs Allan, Mrs Wingate, Mrs Wall, Mrs Cogswell, and Miss Kilkelly.

The Philip Neill memorial prize, which is awarded annually by the University of Otago for musical competition, has been won this year by Mrs Dorothy I. Scott, of Dunedin, and Miss Dorothea Franshi, of Auckland. Mrs Scctt’s entry for the award was a song-cycle for soprano voice, piano, and string quartet, entitled “In the Younger Land,” the songs of which are settings of words by New Zealand poets. Until recently Mrs Scott taught music in Dunedin. She still takes an active interest in musical culture, being president of the Society of Women Musicians. Mrs Jean Kennedy Irvine, a gentlevoiced Scotswoman, has been appointed the first woman president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, a society that is a century old. Mrs Irvine holds an important post in the Ministry of Health as Superintendent of the South-eastern Pricing Office.
