ZEALANDER AT FOXTON

RACING

WEAK COMPETITION Since he recommenced racing last month the Trentham-trained Zealander has had three races over sprint distances. He will tackle a longer journey in the Carnarvon Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, at the Foxtqn meeting on Saturday. He will meet a weak field, and with 8- is only 41b above the lowest weighted horses in the race. Zealander is a four-year-old gelding by Foxbridge from Gay Blonde, and on his breeding should have no difficulty in running out a middle distance. His dam was a high-class race mare, which was up to weight-for-age class and won 17 races and £7015 in stakes. Her successes included the Great Northern Guineas, Derby, and Oaks, and the A.R.C. Railway Handicap in the then record time of Imm 11 3-ssec. She won two weight-for-age races in Australia, the : A.J.C. Craven Plate and the V.R.C. L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes. Zealander has done comparatively little racing, having contested only 15 races to date, and this season may well live up to his breeding He is raced in partnership by Messrs A. Grant, of Fairlie, and F. W. Hughes, of Sydney, who purchased him as a yearling for 1750 guineas. Has Grown Little Sea Flower, which was trained at Riccarton by C. G. Humphries last season, is now in training at Invercargill and may make her first appearance as a three-year-old in the Tally Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting. A well-bred filly by Neptune from Kudos, a granddaughter of Cinna, the dam of Beau Pere and Mr Standfast, Sea Flower was purchased as a yearling by the late Mr W. T. Hazlett for 1600 guineas. She was small as a two-year-old, but possessed plenty of speed and won the Spring Nursery Handicap at Riccarton and the Hopeful Handicap at Wingatui. It is reported that Sea Flower, has grown little since last autumn, in which case she may not go far this season. Sea Flower will make a valuable mare for the stud when she finishes racing, and that was the main reason for her purchase. May be Early Winner One of the speediest of the two-year-olds at Riccarton is the Kincardine colt, Card Money, trained by G. S. Barr. Kincardine’s stock have not made early two-year-olds, but Card Money may prove thqj exception. He is built on smaller lines than most of the Kincardine colts, and on his dam’s side comes from a family that has produced some speedy two-year-olds. His dam, Pocket Money, is by Friday Night (a brother to Phar Lap) from Gold Paper, by Paper Money from Vicereine, by Birkenhead. Gold Paper was a speedy mare as a two-year-old, and was a sister to two fast two-year-old winners in Gold Tinge, winner of the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate, and Pin Money, winner of the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton. Card Money is a good, clean-actioned colt like most two-year-olds that come early. Problem for Trainer Belle Leonne has had an easy time since she raced at the Grand National meeting. Belle Leonne always looks well and gallops well on the tracks, but it is only occasionally that she races well. She is a problem horse for her trainer, as she has the ability to win a race or two. She was raced in a hood in the Heathcote Handicap on the last day of the Grand National meeting, but she did not fare any better. Needs to Settle Down J. S. Olive has taken Mr H. D. Greenwood’s three-year-old filly, Lament, • in hand. F. A. Roberts had her in training as a two-year-old, but she was very highly strung and was sent home for a good spell after racing at the midsummer meeting at Riccarton last February. Now that she has had a good spell and has a bit more age. Lament may settle down. She is by Coronach from Cherry’s Ticket, and was purchased at the 1946 yearling sales for 1000 guineas. Her dam, a Croupier mare, had a similar temperament when she'was first trained, but with age and racing she settled down and won five races, including the A.R.C. Bowen and Members’ Handicaps. Dates Changed The Reefton Jockey Club’s spring meeting was originally set down for September 27 and October 4, but the .second dav will now be held on Monday, September 29. The change will be appreciated by owners, trainers, and jockeys. The meeting will clash with the first day of the Dunedin spring meeting, but is not likely to be much affected by it. Sole Representative Real Night was entered for the Otago Hunt Cup, but will not make the trip, and Riccarton’s only representative at the meeting will be Edward. The field is not a good one, and some of those entered have had a fair amount of racing this winter and may be a bit jaded. With 9- Edward is quite handily weighted.

The three-year-old filly Ocean City is in work again and is now in G. S. Barr’s stable. As a two-year-old Ocean City was very small and she has not grown much since. She showed a lot of speed in training, but did not show up in/* the two races she had last spring. By Man’s Pal, she is from the Iliad mare My Ship, a daughter of the imported mare Princess Argosy, which won the Great Autumn Handicap for Mr J. M. Samson in 1933. Lease Expired

The lease of Artful Maid has expired and her owner, Mr J. M. Samson, of Dunedin, has sent her to join L. Cavalier’s team. A big framed mare by Defaulter from the Lord Quex mare Cleaner, Artful Maid has shown that she has ability, but she has yet to win a race. She is very light in condition at present, and she will be given an easy time until she builds up again. Had to be Let Up

L. J. Ellis had to let up the two-year-old Beau Repaire—Palmyra gelding he trains for Mr Scott Ramsay after he had a run in the two-year-old parade at the Grand National meeting, as his off forejoint was starting to give trouble. The gelding will probably be put aside and given time to harden up after the joint has been lightly blistered. He was purchased at the yearling sales last January for lOOOgns. Barrier Trials at Invercargill

The Southland Racing Club is to arrange a series of barrier trials at Invercargill during the second week in September. Barrier trials are held regularly at certain times of the year in Sydney and Melbourne, and are of great benefit to trainers in preparing horses, while they also give apprentice riders useful experience in riding under race conditions. Similar trials have been held at Riccarton before the New Zealand Cup meeting, but an extension of the scheme in New Zealand would be of great benefit. Race Should Improve

Night School was made favourite for the Waverley Hack Handicap at New Plymouth last Saturday, and finished fifth after covering some extra ground. He paraded big in condition and is likely to be much improved with the race. A three-year-old gelding by Nightly from Schoolgirl, he was bred by Mr G. H. Humphries, of Yaldhurst, who sold him as a yearling. As a two-year-old he racea very consistently and in 13 starts won once and was seven times placed. A big chestnut gelding with a light mane and tail, he is trained at New Plymouth by H. Dulieu and he can be expected to improve with age. His’breeder has a halfbrother to him by Royal Chief in training with L. J. Ellis. Late Betting Decisions A North Island totalisator manager has given some interesting figures concerning investments. His averages—based on selling windows being kept open for 20 minutes—show that 5 per cent, of the money is invested in the first five minutes, 15 per cent, in the next five minutes, 25 per cent, in the third five minutes, and 55 per cent, in the last five minutes. Ashburton Racing Club Entries Nominations for the spring meeting and final forfeits for the John Grigg Stakes, 1947, are due not later than 8 p ; m. on Monday, Ist September, 1947. —Advt.
