ATTACKS MADE ON PRIESTS

ARRESTS BY TRIESTE POLICE (Rec. 7 p.m.) ROME, August 26. According to a message from Trieste, the police have arrested 33 persons in connexion with the murder of Father Miro Buselich and attacks on other priests. Father Buselich was attacked and killed by a Slovene mob in Lanische, in the Jugoslav-occupied zone of Venezia Giulia. The mob also attacked and seriously injured a Vatican prelate, Archbishop Giacomo Ukmar, who went to the Istrian Peninsula to confirm Roman Catholic children. The attack on the priests at Lanische is regarded in Vatican circles as the “bloody consequence of the recent violent anti-Church speech by the Jugoslav Vice-Premier, Mr Kardelj.” Mr Kardelj, in a speech which he made on August 20, said the Roman Catholic Church in Slovenia was the main enemy of national progress and Jugoslavia’s five-year plan.
