LAND SALES ACT PROSECUTIONS

Fines totalling .£970 were imposed in two cases by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day in reserved decisions on two cases of breaches of the Land Sales Act, in each of which it was alleged that secret payments had been made above the land sales valuation. On a charge of scheming in contravention of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, George Lambert Bruce Whillans, the vendor of the property concerned, was fined £5OO, which included £lOO prescribed by the Act and £4OO which it was alleged was secretly paid to Whillans by the purchaser, William Norman Waite. Waite was granted a certificate for the refund of £295 from the fine imposed on Whillans. The land agent, James William Hayden, who was jointly charged with Whillans, was fined £lOO and his land agent’s licence was cancelled, in the second decision, the Magistrate fined William James Adams £370. It was al-
leged that he procured a secret payment of £270 above the land sales price from David WiHiam Gray foi a property at Silverdale. A refund to the informant of £l7O was ordered.
