RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGES

NO DATE FOR SOUTH CANTERBURY

<P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 25. lx Utago is sucuessxui m witnstancung Southland’s challenge for the Ranfuriy bhieia on September 13, omy one other shield game will be played' this season. North Otago's special challenge having been accepted tor September 27. This decision was made by the management committee of the Otago Rugby Union this evening.

The South Canterbury Union issued a special challenge, suggesting September 10 or October 1. The chairman (Mr A. H. Cameron) pointed out that under the shield rules no matches could be played after September 30, and that, with the Southland and North Otago matches on September 13 and .27, and the Payne Trophy match between the premier teapis of Dunedin and Christchurch on September 20, no spare Saturday was available.

Mr B. Collie, chairman of the selection committee, said the union should not commit the team to an over-strenuous programme. It had already had three hard shield games, and would play five matches on tour, meeting Southland's challenge five days after its return from the north.

It was decided to advise the South Canterbury Union that it was regretted that, as there were no vacant Saturdays, the challenge could not be accepted. MAORI TEAM CHOSEN
