MOTORIST FATALLY INJURED

CAR OUT OF CONTROL IN LOOSE METAL

fP.A.) AUCKLAND, August 26. The manager of the Northern Steamship Company, Mr E. J. Hewitt, aged 43. suffered fatal injuries when the car he was driving from Auckland to Thames became out’of control in loose metal between Pokeno and Maramarua and overturned into a swamp He died at 1 am.

Mr Hewitt was accompanied by his wife and his daughter, Yvonne Hewitt, aged seven, both of whom suffered concussion. Their condition is not serious. Mr Hewitt was a member of the Port of Auckland Shipping and Stevedores’ Association, a member of the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation, and a foundation member of the Auckland Junior Chamber of Commerce.

MAN FOUND GASSED STOVE TURNED ON IN HUT About 3.30 p.m' on Saturday, the police found Gordon Hutton, aged about 60. unconscious in his hut at 22 Gloucester street. A ring on a small gas stove was turned partly on and there was a strong smell of gas in the hut. Mr Hutton, who was lying across his bed in his night attire.'was carried outside, but did not regain consciousness. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by St. John Ambulance, and he was still unconscious when admitted. Last evening he was reported to be on the seriously ill list. Two women reported to the police that they had not seen Mr Hutton since Friday, and that they could smell gas outside the hut. CYCLIST INJURED

Harry Swann, aged 16, of 681 Ferry road, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, suffering from head injuries, after ne had struck a post while he was riding his bicycle about 7 p.m. yesterday.
