COMPETITIONS AT TIMARU

N.Z. PIPING AND DANCING ASSOCIATION From Oui Own Reporter TIMARU, August 25. The annual competitions conuucted at Timaru under tne auspices of the South Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association were begun to-day. Allowing for post entries for the piping and Highland dress sections, it is expected that the entries for the competitiops will total 2200. Last year’s entries, which were a record, totalled 2100. Competitors from Gisborne to the Bluff are taking part. The competitions were officially opened in the Bay Hall to-night by the patron of the Piping and Dancing Association (Mr A. E. S. Hanan). The president (Mr A. A. Millar) also spoke. There were large attendances at all sessions during the day, and the Bay Hall was crowded for the evening session. The judges are:—national dancing. Mrs E. D. Ritchie (Christchurch); fancy dancing, Miss Sylvia Gunther, M.R.A.D. (Christchurch); vocal and instrumental, Mr Clifton Cook. L.T.C.L.. A.T.C.L. (Christchurch); elocution. Miss Beryl Eaggs, L.T.C.L. (Christchurch); brass instruments, Mr Douglas W. Smith (Timaru); pipe music, Mr Sinclair Chisholm (Christchurch). The official pipers are Messrs T. Harvey and R. Jones, and the official accompanists Mesdames F. Stowell. A.T.C.L.. L.T.C.L. (vocal), and M. L. Kelly (fancy dancing).
