STATE CONTROL OF BANKS

AUSTRALIAN PLAN OPPOSED

(Rec. 8.30 p.m,) SYDNEY, August,2s. “This is a new war,” said the Federal Opposition Leader (Mr R. G. Menzies) addressing a meeting of 3000 persons in the Sydney Town Hall this afternoon in a protest against the nationalisation of banking. “The weapons will be public opinion, speech, writing, and the conviction of honest men,” he said. “I stand here in the name of free people to declare war on Fascism in Australia. The penalty of defeat will be no less surely the last of our liberties than if Hitler had passed triumphantly to London. The proposal represents an enormous step towards the creation of a State in which the Government will tell the citizen how he may live, what he is to do, and what he is to spend. What is to be taken from the citizen is the right for which the last war was fought.”
