ARMY COUP IN ECUADOR

PRESIDENT DEPOSED DEFENCE MINISTER SEIZES POWER GUAYAQUIL (Ecuador), August 24. The Minister of Defence (Colonel Carlos Mancheno), backed by troops, ousted the President (Dr. Jose Velasco Ibarra) from office early to-day. Dr. Ibarra was arrested ana taken to a military barracks. It is understood that Dr. Ibarra had attempted to discharge Colonel Mancheno. Dr. Ibarra became President as a result of a popular uprising in May, 1944, against the government of Dr. Carlos Alberto Arroyo del Rio. Colonel Mancheno announced that he had assumed complete control of the Government in the name of Ecua-

dor’s armed forces. He said that Dr. Ibarra had “resigned” in the interests of the tranquillity of the country and would be exiled to Colombia.

Dr. Ibarra’s resignation followed his arrest by Colonel Mancheno’s troops. It will be his third exile after political turmoil.
