WARNINGS BY BOTH LEADERS

Pandit Nehru (Prime Minister of India), who is in East Punjab, said that “retaliation in any form or’shape is no remedy” for the disturbances in Pakistan’s West Punjab. He added that “disturbing news’* had reached him from the Moslem majority areas of the West Punjab. Pandit Nehru flew to Jullundur and Amritsar. He appealed to the people to restore peace on India’s side of the partitioned Punjab, adding that until this was achieved his energies could not be devoted to ensuring the safety of the minorities in the west.

•The Governor-General of Pakistan (Mr Jinnah), speaking at Karachi, called on Moslems to beware of the dangers which might overwhelm-their newly-won State should they allow the feeling of the moment to gain mastery of their actions. Pakistan, he said,, chould be kept absolutely free from disorder. Pakistan’ however, was not a mere idle spectator of what was happening in the East Punjab. The resources of the Dominion would be fully used to relieve the victims and organise the evacuation of those still being threatened.
