LYTTELTON NEWS

BREAD DELIVERY WANTED The restoration of bread delivery in Lyttelton was discussed at the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. Cr. C. A. Walker said that the time was well past when Lyttelton should have a bread delivery. In most districts around Christchurch there was household delivery, and he did not see why Lyttelton should not have this service.

Supporting Cr. Walker, Cr. G. Briggs said that some of the retailers would'.not even wrap the bread. The bakers no longer had the excuse that tyres and petrol were ip short supply. There was nothing to prevent bread delivery in Lyttelton, said Cr. C. A. Bridger, but there appeared to be a monopoly jn the town. Cr. F. H. Heal expressed the hope that it was only the scarcity of labour which prevented one baker resuming delivery. They might as well admit that what was wanted was competition, said Cr. Briggs. Should another baker set up in the town there- would soon be a change. Crs. Briggs and Bridger were appointed to interview the bakers to discuss the possibility of the resumption of deliveries. Mayor Welcomed The Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) presided at the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening after an absence of nearly three months. He was welcomed by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. F. H. Heal) and Cr. W. T. Lindsay. Mr Lester thanked Cr. Heal for the manner in which he had carried out the mayoral duties. Golf A stroke competition held by the Charteris Bay Golf Club on Sunday for the Bradley Shilling was won by B. Smart, 89, 26— 63. A. Jackson, 81, 16—65, was the runner-up.
