ACTION AGAINST STUDENTS

(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW DELHI, August 23. The Chinese Government’s purge of trouble-making students hit the American church-supported University of Nanking yesterday when the Education Ministry ordered the authorities to dismiss 37 students, says the Nanking correspondent of the “New York

Times.” The Ministry alleged that the students were Communists or members of the Democratic League and, as leaders in strikes and agitations, were subject to dismissal under the new national mobilisation regulations. The university authorities, who have so far not taken action to carry out the order, said that they doubted the accuracy of the Government’s charge*. Their investigations indicated the possibility that only one student was a Communist.

The Government for two months has teen purging the universities of students and professors who are openly critical of the Government’s actions. In Shanghai alone, 437 students and several score of teachers have been ousted. The Government’s attempts to control student thought and activity are causing many students to leave the Government areas to join the Communists.
