NATIONAL MEETING AT ADDINGTON

TROTTING

Highland Fling Wins Two Races

STEWARDS’ HANDICAP WON BY PARDON ME

Highland Fling’s brilliant performance to win the Winter Handicap and the Lightning Free-for-all, a thrilling finish among five horses after a splendid exhibition of trotting in the Stewards' Handicap, an outstanding effort by Maudeen to win the Islington Handicap, and Gay Knight’s win in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes were the features of the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting at Addington on Saturday.

A fast track, fine weather, punctuality in the running of events and excellent management under the control of the secretary, Mr H. Goggin, made the day one of the most successful in the history of the club.

One of the largest crowds seen at Addington for some time filled the stands and enclosures and many people chose to view the racing from the centre of the racecourse. The totalisator handled £, 155,357 compared with £147,387 last year. With little form to guide them after a spell of nearly three months from trotting, the public showed good judgment, sending out winners in Maudeen, Maori Home, Highland Fling and Worthy Gold first favourite on the win totalisator. Place dividends were returned by first favourites in Emulous, Congo Song, Sprayman, Worthy Gold, Highland Fling and Maudeen.

Excitement was intense as the field lined up tot the start of the principal event, the Winter Handicap, in which L. F. Becketts bracket, Highland Fling and Nyallo Scott, carried aoout a third of the total investments on the win machine. “Will they go away?’’ was the question troubling their supporters who were relieved when the pair moved off slowly but safely when the tapes were released. Neither N. L.* Berkett with Nyallo Scott nor C. R. Berkett with Highland Fling were in a hurry to send their charges after the leaders, and with four furlongs covered they had Gold Peg, Sir Michael, Trusty Scott, Jack’s Son, Aberhall, Local Gold, Cabin Boy, Highland Scott, In the Mood, Plunder Bar, Cameronian, and Acropolis in front of them. With threequarters of a mile to go, Gold Peg was still setting the pace from Sir Michael, with Trusty Scott, Jack’s Son, Local Gold, Plunder Bar, Aberhall, Highland Scott, Nyallo Scott and Highland Fling following.

The bracketed horses were never far apart during the race, and when Nyallo Scott improved his position to take the lead in the back straight he was closely followed by Highland Fling. Two furlongs from home they were clear of Gold Peg, Sir Michael, Cameronian, Trusty Scott, Dundee Sandy, Aberhall, and Countless.

Highland Fling and Nyallo Scott were in front with a furlong to go, and, urged on by the roar of thousands of excited spectators, Highland Fling carried on for a comfortable win in 4min 16 4-ssec, smart time at this period of the year. In a photo-finish for second place, Dundee Sandy just shaded Cameronian, which was closely followed by Countless and Highland Scott.

Dundee Sandy’s performance to finish in second place was one of the best of the day, as he was still near the rear of the field with a mile and a quarter covered. Driven by V Alborn, ■who trains him for Mr B. Rushton, Dundee Sandy nhiehed gamely, and, better placed in the handicaps, he should soon lead a field home. Cameronian’s third placing was full of merit, and a winning turn may come for him in the National Handicap on the second day of the meeting. Countless, which started from the 60 yards mark, gave his usual honest display to earn the fourth prize of £B5 in the smart time of 4min 15 3-ssec. “He surprised me,” said his trainerdriver, A. G. Collison, after the race. “He was so far from the leaders at one stage that I didn’t give him any show, but he finished on well. He appears to be racing just as well as ever.”

Highland Fling Wins Again ’Die rousing reception which Highland Fling received after his spectacular effort to outclass most of the best horses in commission in the Lightning Free-for-All was a richly-deserved tribute to a game pacer, and his driver, C. R. Berkett, who Is a son of the trainer, L. F. Berkett. Highland Fling drew fourteenth position at the barrier and he started from the second row, together with Nyallo Scott, Which had drawn number 11 position. Both horses left the mark smoothly, and when the field settled down they were following Turco, Gold Bar, Battle Colours, Shadow Maid, War Form, Knave of Diamonds, Navigate, Emulous, Loyal Nurse, Countless, and Acropolis. Gold Bar. soon took the lead from Turco and there was a roar from the crowd as the flying son of Grattan Loyal led past the stands from Turco, Knave of Diamonds, Emulous, and Battle Colours. Highland Fling was in tenth place with six furlongs to go, but once into the back straight he commenced a fast run which

carried him up to Gold Bar. Approaching the entrance to the straight these two , iwere followed by Turco, Emulous, Knave ©f Diamonds, Nyallo Scott, Navigate, and Acropolis.

Highland Fling soon had Gold Bar’s measure once the field straightened 'up for the run home, and he was always master of the situation over the last furlong, carrying on to win with the greatest of ease from Emulous. Highland Fling is a smooth-actioned Eicer by U. Scott from Queen Ayesha. is two winning efforts on Saturday earned £1630 for Mr A. T. Kemble, who purchased him from his breeder, Mrs K. Bare, as a youngster. Highland Fling has now definitely won his way to cup company, and his presence in the field should add much interest to the premier event

Emulous was not disgraced in defeat. He raced in fifth place for most of the way, and his driver, W. K. Tatterson, moved him up to challenge Highland Fling once the straight was reached. Tatterson quickly sized up the position and, with Highland Fling going so well in front, he did not knock his horse about in an endeavour to overhaul him. Like the winner, Emulous is a high-class pacer, and trotting enthusiasts will look forward to further meetings between the two. Nyallo Scott, which was in sixth place at the top of the straight, finished in a determined manner to earn the third prize of £75. Nyallo Scott is very well at present, and he should add to his record on the second day of the meeting A Thrilling Finish Reinsmanship played an important part m the success of Pardon Me in the Stewards’ Handicap, and much of the credit I for her win is due to J. B. Pringle, a fine horseman, who was the most successful driver of trotters in the 1946-47 season. Although it was the smallest field on the programme, the race provided a fine exhibition of trotting which was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd. Forewarned lost ground at the start and Sure Lady refused to settle down after moving off correctly. Pardon Me did not gather her speed quickly, and when the field settled down she had Mistydale, Willie Winkie, Fire Water, Gelert. Rere- *\ a £ a ’ Toushay, and Range Finder in front of her. Once she was properly balanced, Pnngle moved Pardon Me up to follow Mistydale, Willie Winkie, and Toushay. Mistydale appeared to be going easily in the lead with two furlongs to go and the crowd were on their toes when RereX®k?. Toushay. Gelert, Pardon Me, and Willie Winkie fanned across the track as they issued challenges. Mistvdale dropped back under pressure, but the others stuck to their gait in fine style, and in one of the best finishes of the day. Pardon Me won by half a length from Willie Winkie. In a photo-finish for the minor money, Rerewaka just headed Toushay. A good-looking mare by Swordsman from Troop Carrier, Pardon Me was paraded in splendid order by C. H. Fairman, who trains her at Riccarton for Mr W* Hosking. Pardon Me is a high-class trotter and she should prove a profitable proposition this season. Willie Winkie finished particularly fast, and he should prove capable of earning some of the prize-money in the August Trotting Free-for-All next Saturday. A Promising Youngster Knight, which finished in second place to Congo Song in his heat at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s meeting at Addington last week, confirmed the good impression formed of wto he S a / e a dashing display to Sfkec p/L Canterbury Three-year-old F. E - Berry, for whom •t y her brotber - R - ’■ Berry, •tS y arsa n ',S'th m °Y ed , out smar tly at the •tan ana with a Xurlong covered he was

in fifth place to Yours xruly, Chief Officer, Red Flight, and Viceroy. Red Flight soon took over the role of pacemaker, and, with half the journey covered, he was followed by Viceroy, Chief Officer, Yours Truly, Beckleigh, Whipster,* Highland Chief, Quarter Deck, Victory Globe, Congo Song. David’s Pride, Grand Scott, and Sir Vivian.

Red Flight dropped back with a mile and "a quarter covered, and Viceroy led into the straight from Yours Truly, Beckleigh, Gay Knight, Whipster, and Congo Song. Gay Knight finished straight and true under pressure to carry on and win by a length from Congo Song, with Viceroy close up in third place. A gelding by Springfield Globe from Grace McElwyn, Gay Knight is a hardy type, and he may play a prominent part in the classics to be decided later in the

The favourite, Congo Song, suffered bad luck in the running and he will probably carry on to much better company than most of this field. A well-built colt by Gold Bar from Flying Helen. Congo Song bears the stamp of quality.

Viceroy gave a sound display for third prize and he should develop into a useful performer for C. C. Divine. Whipster, a well-grown colt by Quite Sure from Bantam, appeared to be the unlucky runner and he may do better later in the season. Whipster has some speed but he raced greenly. He should win races when he settles down to race solidly. A High-class Mare Maudeen, the winner of three races for Mr F. Fisher last season, gave a sterling display to add the Islington Handicap to her record. Maudeen had six horses in front of her in the early stages, but. with seven furlongs covered, G. Cameron moved her up-to take the lead, and with a mile to go she was followed by Horatio Nelson, Appreciate, Coral Princess, Starshell, Trevathan, Symetra, Expensive, Right Royal, Sir Raymond, and Notus. Maudeen appeared to be revelling in her work and she was not troubled to carry on and win in 4min 23 3-ssec from a 4min 38sec mark. A well-bred mare, Maudeen appeals as a high-class pacer in the making, and, on this form, she should race well in much tighter classes. By Grattan Loyal, Maudeen is out of Queen Maud, the dam of a fast pacer in Sports Guide. Queen Maud, which was bred by Mrs M. Duncan, is by Travis Axworthy from Sister Maud, by Nelson Bingen from Lady D?rby, by Rothschild from a grand producer in Notice.

Notus did well to finish in second place after losing ground at the start, and he should soon win a race for T. H. Gunning, who trains him for Mr C, E. Dillon. The field for the Islington Handicap contained some promising improvers, but apparently their drivers were demoralised by G. Cameron’s scorched earth tactics, and it cannot be said that the race was either a good contest or that it was a true test of the ability of some of the field. Results

BETTY MAXEGIN

SOLID DISPLAY AT ADDINGTON

Capably handled by D. Townley, who trains her at Hinds, Betty Maxegin gave a solid display of trotting to win the Intermediate Handicap with the greatest of ease from Royal Dale at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday. Max Baer was the smartest to begin, and at the end of the first furlong he was clear of Glenlee, Teddy Gregg, Tall Timber, Strummer, Betty Maxegin, Jason’s Quest, and Gold Weed, with Kildonnin, Blackdale, and Royal Dale, which had made mistakes, following. F. R. May took Glenlee into the lead in the back straight, and he was soon four lengths clear of Max Baer, with about 10 lengths to Teddy Gregg, Betty Maxegin, Tall Timber, and Strummer. Betty Maxegin moved up to be handy to Glenlee with six furlongs to go and, after taking the lead shortly afterwards, she carried on to win by over three lengths from Royal Dale, with an outsider in Jimmy Scott in third place.

The winner of two races against the pacers last season, Betty Maxegin is the 1938. foal of Maxegin and Wrackeen, which is by Wrack from Pansey, by St. Swithin from Verity, by Vancleve from Bar. Betty Maxegin is now racing solidly and she should soon win again for Mrs E. Jamison. Jottings Sir Michael, which was sent out 2-2 in the betting on the Winter Handicap at Addington on Saturday, had the run of the race, but he disappointed his admirers when he failed to fight on once the straight was reached. Follow Me lost any chance he had when he broke at the start of the Speedway Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Democrat, which won two races at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, was bred at Riccarton by Mr C. Johnston. By U. Scott, Democrat is out of Queen Wrack, by Wrack from Entice, the dam of good winners in De Soto and Fancy Goods. Forewarned gave a fine display of trotting in the Stewards’ Handicap at Addington on Saturday after making a mistake at the start. Beckleigh showed a lot of speed after making a slow beginning in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes at Addington on Saturday. Photo-finish The closest finish of the day at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday was provided by Worthy ' Gold. Radical, and Sprayman, which were placed in that order in the Speedway Handicap after the judge, Mr F. A. Jarrett, had called for a photo-finish. Sprayman, which was bracketed with Worthy Gold and Belhall, began smartly, and he was soon followed by his stablerqates. Ribbon Again quickly made up his handicap, but J. B. Pringle was unable to take the lead from Sprayman and Ribbon Again was forced to cover some extra ground as he raced on the outside of Belhall and Worthy Gold. The struggle to keep up with the leaders proved too much for Ribbon Again, and with six furlongs to run he was following Sprayman, Belhall. Worthy Gold, Gold Sheik, Radical, and Dillondale.

Sprayman led into the straight from Worthy Gold, Radical, Belhall (which was tiring), Dillondale, Fancy Goods, and Gamble King, and he looked like holding on for a win with 50 yards to go but. in a desperate finish, Worthy Gold and Radical got up in time to beat him into third place.

A six-year-old son of Gold Bar and Renown’s Last, Worthy Gold is a bold pacer, and he may now carry on to good company for Mr F. Fine. Neat and Tidy Attendants in charge of horses at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday were issued with white coats to wear when taking their charges to and from the birdcage. The uniforms looked neat and tidy, and the smart effect caused much comment. A High-class Pacer

Maori Home, the winner of four races in six starts for Mr B. Rushton last season, started off the season well with a fine performance to win the Heathcote Handicap from Ben Adam. Maori Home’s winter coat gave him a rough appearance when he paraded on Saturday, but the public supported him confidently and he was sent out 1-3 in the betting. Driven by his trainer, V. Alborn, Maori Home followed Remlap, Limerick Pride, Direct Medium, and Ben Adam out at the start, and Alborn wgs content to remain handy to the leaders over the first mile and a half. With just over three furlongs to go Maori Home improved his position to follow Limerick Pride and Remlap and, once he was allowed to do his best when the straight was reached, he quickly took the lead and won in a convincing manner from Ben Adam, which gave his usual honest display for C. M. Laing. A five-year-old son of Dillon Hall and Native Home, Maori Home has won at his last two starts at Addington, and a bright future is predicted for him. Lost Ground Baby Grand, a winner at the matinee meeting at Addington last week, was confidently supported in some quarters' to win the Islington Handicap at Addington on Saturday, but the Lusty Volo gelding was never a* possibility after increasing his handicap by breaking at the start. Reminders Withdrawals for the second day of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National Meeting, to be held on Saturday, the 30th instant, must be received by 5 p.m. To-day (Monday). Advt. Nominations for all events at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting, to be held on the Addington Course on September 6, will close at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday). —Advt.
