FAIRYHOUSE SOLD The steeplechaser. Fairyhouse, has been bought from Mr J. D. Roberts by the bloodstock department of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., on behalf of Mrs D. W. J. Gould, and Mr A. S. Elworthy, who will race him in partnership. The price has not been disclosed. Bred by Mr J. H. Grigg, at Longbeach, he is an 11-year-old gelding by Day Comet from Fairness, the dam of Test Pilot. Fairyhouse began his racing career at an age when most horses are finishing theirs. His first appearance was in the Christchurch Hunt Cup, at the Hunt Club’s meeting on July 26, when he showed that he had been a good steeplechaser wasted. He led practically all the way. He followed that success with an easy win in the Enfield Steeplechase on the first day of the Grand National meeting. He stifled himself m the Beaufort Steeplechase on the second day, and was beaten by Bravura. In the Hunt Cup Steeplechase last Saturday he was beaten into third place by Edward and Ballyaggan. Considering his age when he started racing Fairyhouse did extremely well to stand up to four starts on successive Saturdays. He is one of the most proficient jumpers seen at Riccarton for several seasons, and in spite of his years, he should be a good proposition for his new owners.

Shipping Arrangements Not Completed Although no definite shipping arrangements have been made, L. J. Ellis said yesterday that Bruce was likely to go to Australia for the Melbourne Cup if a suitable ship were available. He was in touch with Bruce’s owner, Mr Scott Ramsay, yesterday. Mr Ramsay said he would be in Christchurch towards the end of next week when a final decision would be made. The Wahine resumes the intercolonial passenger service on September 12, and it may be possible to arrange shipping space for Bruce on that vessel. Ellis said previously that he was averse to sending Bruce to Australia on a cargo vessel.
