THREE-YEAR-OLD STAKES

SIR VIVIAN MAY BE FAVOURITE An outstanding two-year-old pacer last season. Sir Vivian is handicapped to give away starts of up to 24 yards to the other 17 acceptors in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes of one mile and a half at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington to-day. A solidly-made son o£ Grattan Loyal and Jenny's Bond, Sir Vivian was purchased at the 1945 yearling sales by Mr P. V. Flexman, who gave him to J. Young to educate at Addington.

Sir Vivian progressed rapidly under Young’s patient care, and at his first start for the season he finished in second place to British Machine after making a slow begnning in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on February 8. Sir Vivian’s next appearance was in the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 17 when, after being at least 50 yards behind the leaders at one stage, he finished fast in third place to Hilda Scott and Congo Song. Sir Vivian continued to improve and, at his next start, he romped home in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on June 2, winning by two lengths from Congo Song, with Viceroy another length away in third place. Congo Sohg was reported to have been suffering from a cold when he contested the Sapling Stakes, and, at his best, he should prove the hardest for Sir Vivian to beat. A splendid son of the flying Gold Bar, Congo Song is a sensible type and he appears destined to race in the

David’s Pride showed a nice turn of speed at the matinee meeting at Addington on Tuesday, and he is entitled to consideration. A gelding by U. Scott from Glorietta, David’s Pride is trainecF at New Brighton by J. W. Fraser for Dr. A. P. Cotter and Mr E. F. C. Hinds. The Temuka trainer, T. H. Gunning, is represented by a good-looking filly in Daisy Bar, which is by Gold Bar from Daisy Scott, by U. Scott from Daisy Pointer, the dam of a family of winners including Sir Gowan, Fascination, Frisco Lady, Mitaya, and Gallant Pointer. Daisy Bar has shown speed in the early part of some of her races, and she may. prove capable of springing a surprise to-day. Gay Knight and Victory Globe, which are trained at Yaldhurst by R. J. Berry, are likely types. A gelding. Gay Knight, which is owned by Miss P. E. Berry, is by Springfield Globe from a winner in Grace McElwyn, which left winners in Terry O’Shea to Rey de Oro and Troubadour to Quite Sure. A daughter of Jack Potts and a fine performer in Jean McElwyn, Grace McElwyn has a record of 2min 41 4-ssec to her credit. Victory Globe is a colt by Springfield Globe from Rorqual, which is by Man o’ War from a Wildwood Junr. mare.

C. C. Devine’s Red Shadow gelding, Viceroy, gave good displays last season, and. togetner with. Whipster from S. T. Webster’s stable at Tinwald, he may fight out the finish with Sir Vivian and Congo Song

Jottings Sir Raymond is now being trained at Templeton by F. E. Upton, who was associated with the late R. J. Humphreys’ team for several years. Demetrius, which was suffering from a cold when he raced in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting in June, has been spelling since then. Benghazi’s legs have been causing his trainer, J. Young, some worry, and the big son of Wrack and Asset has now been fired and turned out for a spell. G. S. Smith has had a set of colours made in plastic material. They should prove a boon on wet days. E. A. Berry has Pirouette working well and she should pay her way this season. Ribbon Again has come into favour for the Speedway Handicap at Addington today. Bred to Win C. R. Beckett is educating an attractive yearling filly, which shows a lot of ability at this stage of her preparation. The youngster, which was sold for 625 guineas at the yearling sales, is bred to win races, being by a successful performer in Springfield Globe from Parisienne, which is by Rey de Oro from Yenot, by Harold Dillon from a mare by Rothschild.
