AGE BENEFIT

Sir, —An increase of 5s a week will be acceptable and will meet more or less the rising cost of food and goods, but will not enlarge our restricted living or put us on an equality with those now gradually joining. We had to work through life on low wages and also had to pay quarterly dues to the fund up to the last year or so. We could not save, and had few or no assets when we became pensioners. Present workers have a much better opportunity for saving and making a good home before reaching pension age. I feel that the authorities still view pensions, at bottom, as charity grants to society’s underdogs. I think the pensions should be increased by 10s a week. —Yours, etc., PENSIONER.
