EXPLOSION IN CADIZ
Over 400 Bodies Found “5000 TO 6000 MAY BE DEAD” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.30 a.m. MADRID, August 21. More than 400 bodies of victims of the explosion in Cadiz have been discovered. “A death-roll of between 5000 and 6000 is feared by officials,” says a British United Press correspondent. ‘‘Army sappers are digging through huge piles of rubble and fire-black-ened ruins, under which the bodies of many victims are still buried. “Queues of weeping people are filing through the mortuaries trying to identify the dead. “Yesterday 113 victims were given a mass burial. Two hundred bodies await identification. “Two thousand seriously injured are in Cadiz and neighbouring hospitals. “The telephone and lighting services are now functioning again, but water is being distributed by carts and lorries, as the water mains are still cut. “The authorities are holding quiry to ascertain the cause of the first explosion among 140 torpedoes.”
