COLLECTION FOR ORPHANAGES
RECEIPTS BETTER THAN THOSE OF LAST YEAR
More than 1000 ydung people from the youth organisations of the Anglican, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches took part in a house-to-house canvass in Christchurch for money for the children’s orphanages on Saturday. Collections were made in the Kaiapoi, Lyttelton. New Brigh-
ton. and Sumner areas. The exact amount received would not be known until later in the week, said Mr J. L. Hay, chairman of the committee organising the appeal, last evening, but it was known that figures w’ere ahead of those of last year.
The wireless concert broadcast by SYA on Friday evening resulted in about £6OO being received. The appeal for funds for the orphanages will be continued on Wednesday, August 20 with a street day. The money collected will be used for the general upkeep of the homes..
