LORNA LEIGH IN FORM AGAIN

DECISIVE WIN IN OPEN SPRINT

Lorna Leigh showed a return to form with a decisive win in the Paparua Handicap, taking charge at the distance and drawing out to beat Julius Caesar easily, with Frances a fair third. John o’ London and Whitley were smartest out, and at the end of a furlong the former led Whitley and Legal Rose, with Lorna Leigh and Julius Caesar next, and then Finalist, Cipher, and Playtos. The leading division held their positions round to the straight, where John o’ London still had charge from Whitley and Julius Caesar, with Playtos, Lorna Leigh, Legal Rose, and Frances handy. Lorna Leigh came through on the inside at the false rail and soon had charge from Julius Caesar. John o’ London, Whitley, Frances, and Playtos. Lorna Leigh never looked like being caught in the final furlong, and Julius Caesar beat the remainder just as easily. Frances had no difficulty in beating John o’ London for third, then came Playtos, Whitley, Dash o’ Dink, Kirkella,Graeme, and Royal Tan. Kashmiri, Dash o’ Dink, Rival Chase, and Graeme were slow away.

Fairyhouse Again Jumps Well Fairyhouse followed up his win in the Hunt Cup the previous Saturday with another good win in- the Enfield Steeplechase. Jumping to the front at the second fence, he always held command from Bravura, and gave a sound display of jumping to win easily from the latter, which finished well clear of the third horse, Ballyaggan. Fairyhouse went well enough to suggest that he will do better against better company. There were five casualties in the race, only four horses completing the course, Hughsotis being pulled up. Hughsotis showed out first from Fairyhouse, with Bravura and Cloister next. Tissue Paper went out at the fourth fence, the sod wall at the five furlongs, where Fairyhouse was clear of Bravura and Hughsotis, with Cloister next. This was the order to the stand double, where Cloister fell at the second fence. Round to the back straight, Fairyhouse continued clear of Bravura, Hughsotis, and Ballyaggan. Troytown lost his rider at the first of the kennels double, where Real Night refused. Paladeo was the next casualty, losing hfe rider at the brush at the top of the straight. Magnaform Finishes Well Magnaform was always one of the leading division in the Cashmere Plate, and he finished solidly over the last furlong to beat Coral Arc by a length, with the pacemaker, Confidence Trick, in third place. Beau Bijou was left at the start, and Broie was slow to find his feet. Confidence Trick leading down on to the course proper from Magnaform, Coral Arc, and Count Minerva, with Carry On Beaugard, and Broie leading the others. Confidence Trick held charge to the furlong, where Coral Arc and Magnaform worked past him, the latter finishing best to beat Coral Arc by a length. Confidence Trick held on for third, a length and a half away, with three lengths to Broie, which was finishing on strongly in fourth place. Then followed Liebestraum, Gold Medallion, Beaugard, All’s Fair, Detract, Lodestar, Faultrosa, and Leadership. Amateur Rider’s Success

Boolamskee had a good work out for the Grand National Hurdles next Saturday, when he just managed to hold cff a strong late challenge by Desert Trek in the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap to win by a head. The pair were well clear of the third horse, Sphere. Boolamskee was ridden by the amateur rider, Mr E. R. Curtis, who is the first amateur rider to win a flat race against professional jockeys at Riccarton for a good many years. Bay Robe, Periwig, and Glad Fox were the early leaders from King’s Ace, Royal Flash, and Matapan. Glad Fox was clear of Royal Flash and Periwig at the mile, with Bay Robe, King’s Ace, Matapan, Battle Chief, Boolamskee, Kassai, Sphere, and Desert Trek next. At the six furlongs Royal Flash had joined Glad Fox, and the pair led by three lengths from Bav Robe and Periwig. The two leaders still had charge at the half-mile, where Boolamskee and Sphere started to improve their positions, but Desert Trek was still at the rear at this stage. Boolamskee moved up smartly on the home turn and led into the straight from Sphere, King’s Ace, and Glad Fox. Boolamskee diew clear early in the run home and looked to be in for •an easy win, but Desert Trek finished very strongly over the last furlong and just short of the post Boolamskee had to be kicked up and he just managed to hold off the faster-finish-ing Desert Trek by a head. There was a gap of five lengths to Sphere, which beat Periwig by a length. Then followed King’s Ace, Glad Fox, and Battle Chief. Duality Outstays Hack Hurdlers After being well back in the running until the home turn, Duality took charge soon after clearing the last hurdle in the Trial Hurdle Handicap and finished’strongly to beat Night Fighter by a length, with Ruling Moment and Flying Ace close up. In the scramble for positions early. The Crofter fell at the first hurdle, and John Gay lost his rider. Passing the stands, Fading Light had charge from Kosciusko and Ruling Moment, with Tutere, Flying Ace, and Night Fighter handy. Two good jumps at the next two hurdles took Ruling Moment to the front, and at the mile he led from Night Fighter, and Lord Roland, with Fading Light next, just clear of Kosciusko, followed by Flying Ace, Aldis Lamp, and Montello d’Oro. Fading Light dropped back a little further on and with four furlongs to run Ruling Moment was closely followed by Lord Roland and Night Fighter, with Kosciusko, Montello d'Oro, Flying Ace, Duality, and Fading Light next. Ruling Moment held charge into the straight from Night Fighter, with Flying Ace and Duality moving up. Night Fighter just led Ruling, Moment over the last hurdle, but in the run home Duality soon took charge and won decisively by three lengths from Night Fighter, with Ruling Moment threequarters of a length away. Flying Ace was the same distance further back. Montello d’Oro was fifth. Then came Aldis Lr-mp and Kosciusko clear of the rest. Consistency Regarded Beechwood’s consistency was well rewarded when he won the Avonhead Hack Handicap, but he had to fight hard over the last furlong to hold off Deficiency by a neck, with Special Flight finishing on half a length back in third place, after not getting a very favourable run. Copper Coin, after being well back at the home turn, finished strongly in fourth jfiace without ever having a chance of catcning the first three. Young John and Robingay were the early leaders, but at the end of two furlongs Young John and Fort Silver were showing the way to Vanity King and Beechwood, followed by Ganjah, Queen’s General, Sandy’s Pride, Royal Robe, and Special Flight, awkwardly placed on the rails. Young John and Fort Silver held charge round the home turn from Beechwood and Vanity King. Beechwood joined Young John entering the straight, with Fort Silver, Royal Robe. Ganjah. Special Flight and Deficiency next. At the furlong Beechwood just had charge from -Deficiency and in a hard finish managed to prevail by a neck. Special Flight finished well into third place, three lenths clear of Copper Coin. Then came Ganjah. Penetrate, Blue Hussar, and Fort Silver. C.J.C.
