CANTERBURY RETAINS] SHIELD WELLINGTON BEATEN IN GOOD GAME Before a large attendance at Hagley j Park, the Canterbury hockey team successfully defended the New Zealand Challenge Shield against Wellington, winning by 3 goals to 0. after a ding-dong | struggle. Clever, scientific hockey was i played by both teams. The teams were:— Canterbury: L. Jones. L. Smith. O. Whitford, W. Morris. C. V. Walter (captain). . R. Peacock, F. B. Smith. T. Eggleton, R. ! Calvert. J. Reece, and N. Wales. Wellington.—G. Coates, D. Chisholm. L. McKelvie, J. Tynan. D. Mulheron (cap- , tain), H. Lawry. H. Englert. D. Tooby, J. Mulheron, E. Morton. H. Sim. An injury to an angle put E. Thomas out of the Canterbury side, and T. Eggle- [ ton was moved from left half to inside right, and R. Peacock took Eggleton's' place at left half. Wellington broke away from the bully, j but Jones, the Canterbury goalie, made a

confident save. Eggleton quickly adapted | himself to his new position and started a ; Canterbury raid which ended in a hit over. Jones again proved his worth by kicking well out when Morton headed a Wellington movement. Walter, Wales, and Reece took part in a Canterbury raid which gained a corner, from which Eggleton scored by fast following in. Brilliant defence by O. Whitford and L. Smith kept Canterbury’s goal intact, and at the other end Chisholm and Coates kept > Wellington’s goal clear. Sim and Morton carried play well down, but again Jones i cleared. A combined effort by the Can- , terbury forwards, led by Calvert, brought no result, although Smith sent over a perfect centre. Eggleton stood out for I brilliant play which reached Wellington’s circle, but Coates was sound. Calvert. Reece, and Wales led Canterbury in a promising raid, which Chisholm intercepted. L. Smith started Wales on a great solo run. but his shot went wide, and at half-time Canterbury led 1-0. The second spell opened with Canterrbury on the offensive, and a penalty corner gave Reece a chance to increase the score. Canterbury’s defence was very sound and. although J. Mulheron. Tooby, and Englert put plenty of dash into their play, they failed to pierce the defence. Brilliant passing between F. B. Smith, Reece, and Wales gave Calvert a chance, but a kick by Coates prevented a goal. Chisholm, J. Tynan, and H. Lawry were playing brilliant hockey in Wellington’s back and half lines, and the game swung from end to end. Wales broke away on Canterbury’s left, and a roll-in near Wellington’s goalline ended in Reece securing and goaling smartly. Wellington made desperate efforts to reach the Canterbury goal, but the defence held. The umpires were Messrs H. Teague and A. Williams.
