TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
INSTALLATION AT RAILWAY STATION An automatic telephone exchange of the rotary type, with a capacity of 200 lines, is to be opened by the Railways Department at Christchurch to-day, and all calls to and from the railway within the Christchurch area will in future go through the switchboard. On each of the four toll positions appear the 200 automatic extensions, trunk circuits from the automatic equipment, and trunk lines from the Post and Telegraph Department’s exchange. In addition. 30 railway district lines are provided, including nine carrier channels to main railway centres, two of the channels being used exclusively for inter-island communication. All calls to the railways at Christchurch will be made by dialling 32-640. the railway operators directing the calls to the required department. For outgoing calls, users have first to dial 0 before dialling the number of the required subscriber. The switchboard will ( be operated from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily, except on Sundays, and provision has been made for afterhour calls.
