PLOUGHING MATCH AT WAIMATE

LARGE ENTRIES AND ATTENDANCE

Twenty-six competitors took part in a ploughing match held by the Waimate District Young Farmers’ Clubs at Morven on Saturday. The match was the first full-scale fixture held in Waimate district for 22 years—although the Young Farmers’ Club conducted a match at Arno last year—and the number of competitors was greater than that for the Timaru ploughing match held a week previously. There was an attendance estimated at almost 2000.

The paddock chosen tested the skill of. the men, but when they became accustomed to the condition of the ground their work generally was fully up to the standard attained at other matches this year, according to the judges. The organisation and conduct of the match were praised by men associated with ploughing matches in the past.

Judges of the ploughing were Messrs JC. Hay (Waimate). G. D. Hunter (Pukeuri), J. B. Wylie (Taiko), and J. Fo.syth (Willowbridge). Messrs J. C. Faulkner and J. Dempsey (Waimate) judged the horses. Results were:—
