WARNING GIVEN AUSTRALIANS
EFFECTS OF BRITISH DIFFICULTIES
(Rec. 8 p.m.) CANBERRA, August 3. A warning that Australia would be directly hit by Britain’s desperate fight, and that her economy must be geared to meet the crisis, was given by the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) at an industrial relations conference between the Australasian Council of Trade Unions and the Associated Chambers of Manufacturers. He also warned of a possible recession in the United States. The Commonwealth Government rejected, a strong appeal by the employers for an embargo on all strikes. While condemning petty strikes, Mr Chifley said that some strikes were justified. The president of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions (Mr P. J. Clarey) said that, a ban on all strikes would mean that unions would abandon traditional right, and that to accept such a position would be a complete abdication.
The conference decided to-day to frame a national policy to increase production.
