STEWART’S GULLY TENANCIES

QUESTION ASKED BY MR GILLESPIE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) . WELLINGTON. July 30. Notice of a question about some tenants of homes at Stewart’s Gully, who are threatened with eviction, was given in the House of Representatives today by Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition, Hurunui) to the Minister of Railways (Mr R. Semple). “Has the Minister’s attention been drawn to the situation at Stewart’s Gully, where his department has leased certain lands to tenants who have sub-leased sections to people who have erected homes and baches,” asked Mr Gillespie. These tenants were apparently in trouble through alleged failure to comply with certain of the terms of the respective sub-leases and were now threatened with eviction. Was the Minister satisfied, Mr Gillespie asked, with the manner in which the land was being dealt with cy the department’s tenants and could he take any steps to alleviate the anxiety of sub-tenants in ‘‘a very unfortunate position?”
